Leaving the wife and kids at home for a 3 week solo junket (!!) while I change jobs in Oct/Nov, I am thinking of Phuket for two weeks after trips to Hong Kong and Bangkok...I have been to Punta Cana and La Caravelle and I am seeking a litle bit of down time and want to vegetate for 2 weeks before I go back to the rat race...I have no problem with kids but will CM Phuket be overrun with kids at this time of year? It seem this is the tail end of rainy season as well...also how is the golf at the CM? I am more of a duffer and lessons/practice seem quite attractive to me..any other thoughts?? thx

Keithex,
I have been to Phuket twice (there should be some photos of mine in the Phuket site here with more posted at jdlphotos.smugmug.com). You are going at the end of the rainy season, so you should be all right. BTW, it is one of my very favorite clubs. They had the kids club when I was there, but you didn't see the kids that much. That wasn't a problem. Compared to Punta Cana and La Caravelle, you should find this club to be stunning. The food in all the Asian clubs is a cut or two above anything in the American zone, and that doesn't mean the food in the American isn't good, it is.

I can't tell you much about golf. They did have, I think they still do, a nine hole par 3 course at the club. It was a lot of fun, but I am a real duffer. They also had lessons and a practice range as well, and I thought the instructors were pretty good.

In summary, you are going to have a great time there.

There is a asian public holiday on 28 Oct - Deepavali or Diwali .
But I dont think you'll get the Club overunning with kids as year end is usually the school exams period !!

Weather wise it is unpredictable like the rest of the world

Adding on to John Chicago's post - its a pitch and putt course.
They have a putting green . Golf balls, irons, putters, sand wedges provided.

yup, u 'll hv a Great time there !

Regarding the weather, I am with Vinz. These days, you really never know.
We had a January which was much too warm and I am sure, winter will be back soon.

Anyway, to have an idea, I'd check a weather page, like this one. It will give you at least the averages.

Your chances of a conversation in English are exceedingly good. English is the most commonly spoken language at the club. You will hear a mixture of languages spoken, since this is probably the most international of all of the Club Med's. It is also important to note that English is widely used in Thailand, especially in the tourist areas. In the town of Phuket almost all of the signs are in English and Thai. All of the street signs are in English and Thai. You will have absolutely no problem if English is your only language. English is almost universally spoken in the shops.

Thanks John that's good to know. We spent two weeks last Oct at Punta Cana and were, according to the CDV the only English GMs there.
It was great but the staff were mostly only Spanish speaking though the GOs were ok and as helpful as anywhere. I must say the CDV whose name I forget was the most helpful and friendly we've met in all of the 14 CM hols we've had

Hello Vaughan

I went to Phuket village three times.
I think that the stay in Thailand will become the thing without the problem if we can speak English, too.
GO and almost GE of Phuket village speak English. At outside the village, the person engaged in sightseeing speaks English.
A lot of Asians come in Phuket. Some time Gm which can hardly speak English stays in there. They can get communication without a problem
You are English. I think that you do not have any problem at all.
I think that nature is rich and you can experience a lot of Thai traditional culture. in Phuket.
I hope for you have happy vacation in Phuket.

Vaughan,
If you go to jdlphotos.smugmug.com and click on the club med folder and Phuket, you will find maps of the club and of Phuket town. Perhaps that will help you orient (no pun intended) yourself to the club and the surrounding area.

From what I understand, Karim (CDV) is absent right now (CDV meeting in Vittel, I believe).

I hope your holiday was great nonetheless and your trip back home without major negative incidents.
