I have been reading the site and see where the dress code involves wearing colours. However, it does not say if shorts are allowed for dinner. We are leaving on Nov 24th, if there is anyone who can let me know please.
Thanks

You don't have to dress a certain way for ANY meals at Club Med - dinner, lunch or breakfast. You can wear shorts anywhere at any time at Club Med. I routinely wear swim trunks and t-shirt everywhere, from sun-up until bedtime (when I wear nothing). Most guests dress very casually at meals. The dress code colors are for fun, only. For a list of recent color combo's, go here: http://www.eatonlink.net/CMcancun06/schedule.html

Shorts are appropriate in the evening even at the speciality restaurants. In fact, on some nights, I would find pants to warm especially if we were eating in the buffet.

are you really used to wear shorts on the evenings?
Strange, because in the villages where I've been, people wearing shorts are seen like cool, very cool, too much.

Of course, it's your holidays and you do what you want but it's pleasant to have nice clothes for evenings in CM even if you don't like dress-codes.

Personally, I find a very light dress, a nice skirt or very light slacks a lot more comfy than shorts. Besides, it looks really a bit more dressed and very often better also...

Like Flo, I like to dress up a bit in the evenings. After all, you spend your whole day either in beach or sports wear. Just my 2 cents!

Do have a look at agadou's superb Cancun photos from this summer and you'll get an idea how people dress in the evening:

I did not mean to offend anyone about shorts but I do find them more comfortable. I am a person that prefers to be too cool than too warm. I also wear dress shorts with a nice shirt and sandals so I was not talking about gym shorts and a tank top. In any event, the nice thing about CM is that I don't really think anyone really cares how you dress. Wear what is comfortable and enjoy.

Dress shorts or rather bermudas and a nice shirt... love it! Very smart for a guy, Jim.

Flo,

Happy you agree with me. But then, I prefer the guys, when they wear nice soft leather loafers with that outfit and especially a good quality leather belt.

And no beer belly, please!

Kiki, "no beer belly, please." I guess that counts me out with my well-toned "keg" abs.

For me it is about not having to worry about what to wear, or what to do. That's what CM is all about, as I see it. Not like a typical cruise. You do what you want, when you want. And, as I see it, wear what you want, when you want. So, 12spysonu, I think you should not worry about it. Pack light!

Chicago Jim,
Yes, i had a great time! Cancun Club Med is a beautiful place, and i was so happy to see my son... so far away from home!

As for the dress code, its more a colours code. No must, no obligations; u just wear wat ever you want. But, its nice at night , as you can see on some of my pictures, the white, the black, or any other colour dress code. Those colours makes beautiful pictures!:)

Kwatta,

Loved your pics! I can't believe you have two grown sons. You don't even look 30 yourself! My 12-year-old is going to love Jeremy when she goes to the teen club. You are a very good looking family! Thanks again for sharing.

I notice that 12spysonu wrote:

"However, it does not say if shorts are allowed for dinner."

I note that she's a newbie to the site and maybe a newbie to CM and I suspect she was wondering if CM was like other resorts (or cruise ships) where there is a formal dress code and shorts are NOT ALLOWED at dinner.

I think the above comments have reassured her, but I just have to add my view on this:

The day that CM says shorts are NOT allowed at dinner is the day I throw in the towel and start renting a shack at the beach. As I diver, I like to relax after a busy day and while yes, in my youth at CM, I did "dress to kill" for dinner, in my middle age, I prefer to be laid back. And if that means a pair of shorts, so be it! (That's supposed to represent a growl - as you can see, I feel passionately about this subject!)

Now of course, I do mean "normal shorts", not shorts with a tear so that your butt cheek (or something else) is showing through. But I think with a little effort (like what Chicago Jim describes), you can look elegantly casual (and not like you're on a cruise ship - ugh!)

Bisous,
Trish

Yes , I am a newbie, it will be our first trip to CM. My husband is the type that likes to be relaxed on vacation and doesn't like to dress up too much. Thanks to everyone for your responses.

Kwatta, as it gets closer to our departure, please let us know if there is anything Jeremy would like us to bring him from the states. Maybe a book, a CD, favorite snack??? My girls will be happy to do that. When we were in Ixtapa a few years ago, they sent something to a wonderful GO named Jeff after our trip. He spoke French and English but wanted to know more Spanish so we sent him some language CDs. It made us feel good because I know they aren't supposed to accept tips, but we wanted to make a "thank you" gesture. Jeff really made it a great vacation for all of us by taking excellent care of our kids and I'm sure Jeremy is the same way.

Hello Kwatta, Kiki, Craig, Jim, everyone,

long time no talk..!

I just wanted to add on this topic that last summer in Cancun, my wife and I were shocked to find out bathing suits were not allowed anymore at the buffet for lunch..! Are they really expecting us to change for lunch? If they are afraid that slightly wet bathing suits will stain the chairs they should revise their furniture.
Besides this details, we really loved our stay there, and can't wait to go back. (If they stop raising their prices that is..!)

Carpe Diem!

Can you go to lunch in a bathing suit if you have a cover-up on? I think some dress rules are appropriate. I didn't like that on my last cruise men were allowed in the indoor buffet without shirts and some people even came barefoot. It's okay to go to the outdoor snack bar that way, but for a sit down meal, I find it innapropriate. At night, I still like to get a little dressed up. My daughters are the same way. After a shower it's nice to put on a dress, some heels, a little make-up and jewelry.

Jaypay,
Thank you so much! Its very kind of you to ask me what u can bring to Jeremy.
The "thank you gesture"you gave to GO Jeff, is wonderful!
As i am thinking to be in Cancun too in april, i will bring him what he realy loves: Belgian chocolats! :))

agadou, about going to lunch in a bathing suit, i went to lunch in my bathing suit, with something on it.
Pas juste en maillot de bain, mais avec un dessus et maillot sec de préference. Can you please translate , agadou?
Sorry , but my english is very bad! :)
How many times i seat at the inside bar or restaurant on wet chairs!
This is not very pleasent ! Thats why i am for dry cloths in the inside restaurants.

Just adjusted the title of this post and added '... AND lunch'!

Definitely wear something over your DRY swimsuit in the inside and outdoor restaurants.

I usually drape a pareo over a dry beach outfit. When the resto is outside (always and for ages), I make sort of a skirt or even a dress over a one-piece swimsuit.
I haven't been to villages for ages where the resto is totally closed and has A/C which may be too much cooled down for going as I do though.

As far as I remember, GMs are usually requested to throw over something and are asked not to go bare foot (which is obvious, IMO).

You are absolutely right, Kwatta. Sitting at a table for lunch wrapped up in a minimum of cloth seems to be normal for any human being I know.

I hate to find a wet chair when you don't know if it is water from the pool or if someone had some kind of "leakage"......

we have come so far, back in the old days dress code was never a topic for discussion. It was more likely no one was even wearing clothes to dinner in cancun 20 years ago

That is not correct. I was there about 30 years ago and we did dress. Maybe in pareos or swimsuits, but it was required. And some guys did look hot in some of the dresses they wore. But the restaurant back then had no A/C other than the open windows. It came close some times to stripping down.

Do they still have a whole buffet of cheeses and great breads? When I was at the Cancun village twice in the early 90s, I think several nights that was my main meal with wine of course! All the food was great back then and I didn't gain any waeight because I was too busy talking to my new friends!

Hi chrisbo :)
About leakage, lol , thats what happend to me !

It was about 7 PM, still some people at the pool and the beach... i was dressed in black, not something fancy, just a nice cotton fresh dress. I went to the inside bar, seat on the hight chair, waiting for my drink and guess what... ?!
I stand up and find my all back completely wet! Now, i had to go back to my room to change, but had to pass true the outside bar where 100 or more people saw me walking with my wet back ( les fesses mouillées!).
U can imagine how i feld while they thought some leaking going on my back :))

Hi,
About the dress code.....Its a good topic....When I was in Turks in June I brought dress shorts and casual for the evening and I found that was to not the norm..for the crowd there.....on the other hand sometimes clothing are made to have fun.....At CI there was this couple and every night the man wore some outrageous hawaian shirt...One night there was loud colored martini glasses, another night bright fish, another night tropical flowers. We would wait to see what crazy looking shirt he would wear...
.Something I didnt like at CI was that all the GO had to wear the color code of that evening...It made them all look so professional...I felt that some of them could not bring out their personality because of this. One night during a formal dress up there was a GO (I'm sure he is reading this and will comment I hope)in a tie and suit...The tie looked like it was making him uncomfortable. I felt uncomfortable because I knew how hot that evening was...

Every one says pack light when you go on vacation....We have to be thinking if the weather will be hot or cold, maybe dressy or informal.,color codes for CM and.dont forget a extra pair of everything in case you sit in a wet chair...

agadou,

In a few weeks you will see my report. I definitely plan on wearing swim wear type shorts (straight from the waterski dock) to lunch, as I have always done for my past 14 visits to CM Cancun. Dinner, I might try to upgrade from a T to a collared polo shirt (or not), but will likely be wearing my swim shorts - probably dry by this time....

If CM is trying to be a "land cruise", I'll switch to Windjammer Barefoot Cruises for my casual vacations. Let CM compete with the cruise lines - most cruises are cheaper.....

Kwatta, sorry to hear about that incident especially because you dressed very nicely in your photos. Also with Cancun being family there is the kid factor who do not understand things like no wet clothes on clothe furniture or throw things in the garbage when you are done. Oh well. Actually I do not expect people to dress-up on vacation but it is nice to see people nicely dressed which can be done with casual clothes. (Although to be honest, after waking up early with a long day of traveling, i may dress down a little thsat night.) Never really understood this wearing shorts/pants low and barely over the rear showing the underwear or worse none. Just getting old I guess.

Well, while we're on the topic of dress codes (or lack thereof)... this reminds me of my first village, Martinique - in 1989. I was at that little annex restaurant near the beach where they served an "informal lunch". In those days of "Classic Club Med", you could just walk off the beach barefoot in your bikini, pick out a sandwich or salad and sit at the picnic tables. Nobody even thought about the bare feet and the possibility of broken glass, etc.

I was sitting there with some fellow Americans when this French couple came up and sat down at our table. He wore basic shorts (no Speedo, thank God) and she wore a small bikini bottom... and NOTHING else!

I do not know how I kept a straight face while munching on my sandwich and practicing my French with this couple while the wife sat there with her breasts bared to the world. (The American guys with me were in hysterics!).

Later, other French people told me this is typical of the 1970s Brigitte Bardot / St. Tropez generation and these folks still think it's acceptable.

I saw a similar situation at Luxor in 2004 where the pool has a bar built into the center for drinks, coffee, etc. Several times a day, this Frenchwoman would get up from her lounger and walk the long way around the pool topless and then descend the steps into the pool bar, where she would order from the Egyptian barman. The barman later told me that some of the waiters at the village refused to work in that bar because it seemed like every week some woman was doing this.

So see people: there ARE worse things than folks wearing shorts to dinner!

Trish
