Discover Guilin

Excursion recommended by our Discovery center.

Guilin is a jewel amongst Chinese jewels as much as a tourist attraction, famous for its karstic formations and its amazing river the Li.  Its name means "forest of Sweet Osmanthus", owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city. The city has long been renowned for its unique scenery.

In 314 BC, a small settlement was established along the banks of the Li River. In 111 BC, during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Shi An County was established, which could be regarded as the beginning of the city. In 507 AD, the town was renamed Guizhou.Guilin prospered in the Tang and Song dynasties but remained a county.

Whether its a walk along the Li river, admiring its amazing landscape, a walk along the rice fields, a night to admire the moon on Elephant Trunk Hill or a visit to the hippie Yangshuo, Guilin will amaze all that take teh time to discover her.

Li River Cruise

Excursion recommended by our Discovery center.

The Li River originates in the Mao'er Mountains in Xing'an County and flows in the general southern direction through Guilin, Yangshuo and Pingle. In Pingle the Li River merges with two other streams, and continues south as the Gui River, which falls into the Xi Jiang, the western tributary of the Pearl River, in Wuzhou.

The upper course of the River Li is connected by the ancient Lingqu Canal with the Xiang River, which flows north into the Yangtze; this in the past made the Li and Gui Rivers part of a highly important waterway connecting the Yangtze Valley with the Pearl River Delta.

Longsheng Rice Terraces

Longsheng Rice Terraces are located in the Longsheng county north east of Guilin, in the mountains located at 6280 feet in a zone of 27 square miles of rice terraces spreading over 5 traditionnal villages : Jinjiang, Ping’an, Longji, Zhonglu and Dazhai.Discover several points of interest:

You can see the dragon's backbone twisting off into the distance while standing on the top of the mountain . In an early morning, if the weather is fine, the sunrise on the summit of Longsheng Rice Terraces is magnificent.

West Street Shopping

West Street (Xi Jie), situated in the heart of Yangshuo, is alive with cafes offering interesting Chinese and Western food. Travelers' can eat food from many different countries at very reasonable prices. Those who have been wandering around China for a while will probably want to take the chance to break from oily stir-fried vegetables and grab a cup of good coffee or have muesli for breakfast.

West Street in the town center attracts a large number of younger international travelers. West Street is filled with small shops and vendor's stands selling all kinds of souvenirs and snacks. Chinese teenagers mingle with young Western bicyclists and backpackers in Internet cafes, such as Mickey Mao's, Hard Rock Cafe or at Lisa's Cafe eating apple pie, beefsteak French fries, and ice-cream sundaes. These comfort foods from abroad are difficult to find in China. International tourists feel at home here because everyone speaks fluent English and restaurants and bars provide menus in several languages
