Fence in Pool

Have seen in recent pics of the pool at Cherating a fence structure around the deeper section where it steeps down. Please tell me this is temporary and not permanent. Why destroy what was a beautiful pool by putting up this ugly fence. If they are worried about the little kids, then I say the kids should have to stay in the kiddies pool.

Does anyone know what the go is with the ugly fence?

Agree that it is totally ugly aesthetically.

You could be right abt the children bit though . But how do you effectively stop kids straying into the deep end if there is no parental guidance around ? Probably tough for the Lifeguard GO !

Yikes-is that ugly. Wait till some kid gets caught in the bars trying to squeeze through. Pools are a problem when you convert an adult place with a deep pool into a family CM. Actually, here in the U.S. most hotels no long have a truly deep-end and most max out at 4 feet. Kind of wonder how fmilies are coping in Cancun because that pool has deep-end and even the shallow end is about 3 feet. They do have life guards.

Looks hideous but if it saves lives then I suppose its a good idea..... In Noumea we pulled a child out of the pool (not signed into Mini club) as it went from shallow to very deep quite quickly with a really slippery surface. The child was swimming with her father and two siblings, and the father was not watching her - it all happened very quickly and they were lucky the mini lcub lifeguards were at the pool with the other kids! We ended up putting a rope accross the pool with some floats on it so the kids new where the barrier to swim was and had all the kids yell out the rules about the rope before they had pool time!

The last time I went there, I did see those bars up around the pool, found it a distraction from the beauty of the whole area...shocking! I've spoken to one of the lifeguard G.O.s and he said that it is for the safety of the kids so they don't go on the deep end. People ocassionally do laps around that pool, and it tends to get kinda crowded at times. And sometimes kids (of all ages, and who can't swim well) tend to hang out with each other with their parents doing other things around the village. And unless that changes, I think they are permanent.

That's a shame, they have ruined what was a great and beautiful pool. I thought the whole reason they had specific mini club lifeguards was to keep and eye on them. Seriously, when you go to a public pool in Australia on a hot day the couple of lifeguards there seem to be able to look after the masses of people (many of them kids) that are in the pools without someone dying. Not good enough CM. I pay money to go to your beautiful resorts and now you ruin the ambiance by pandering to families by introducing hideously ugly unwanted and needed fences in the pool. Seriously ticked off, as I am heading back there in July and I don't want to have to be climbing over a fence everytime I want to go for a swim.

Oh btw, was there in Feb 06 and they didn't have the fence then, and guess what, everything was fine... no little ankle biters who couldn't swim didn't drown. IMO the parents need to take more responsibility. If your kids can't swim, don't take them to CM and let them swim in the main pool.

i think they now make kids who don't know how to swim identify themselves to the miniclub GOs so they can be kept on closer watch but i agree that the fence is rather ugly. the lifeguards are there for a reason as well and if they decided to keep the fence up during after-duty hours it'd be fair enough.

Actually there was an accident, hence the fence.

Ugly or not,I guess Club Med is not willing to take any chances.Safety takes precedence.

Does anyone know if fitness GO Jeremy is still there? I haven't heard from him in awhile and I didn't know if he was staying at Cherating or going to another village. I was hoping to find someone in the US who is going soon that could bring him a CD for me...Any takers?

Scuba GO's, we go deeper, stay down longer and

Probably easier and cheaper just to get yourself a gun. Once you shoot one of them that should stop the others from coming anywhere near your place.

unfortunatly during my time as a GO at cherating, we had two drowning in that deeper sections. there are only two life guards and they cant be everywhere. if parents were a little more responsible for their own children, then the fence wouldnt have to be there. Unforunatly they are not, and also alot of asian gm's cannot swim. yes it is a baeutiful pool, but as it is so large, with different depths, it is an accident waiting to happen. Yes it looks ugly, but it saves lives. which would you prefer????

I can't believe I am reading this....

Comparing your inconvenience of climbing over a small fence with a safety risk for GMs and their children in a pool that has had its fair share of incidents.... Hmmm...... I know which one I would cater to....

Safety is and should ALWAYS be a PRIORITY......

Bravo Club Med for taking the decision, I am sure that if it is such an eyesore they are trying to find another solution.... The fence prevents accidents from happening now....

A decision such as this should not have to suffer selfish comments such as those above...

My 2 cents...

If you or your kids can't swin.... don't go in or near the pool. Perhaps pick a better place that doesn't have a pool to go for a holiday. At some stage people Have to be responsible for their own actions. My two cents.

The pool was kind of unexpectedly goes deeper and it could trigger panic to those that are not strong swimmers and kids. I agree that it was ugly and tiring to climb over. Also agree that parents need to watch their kids when they are in the deep water although they are on holidays. I remember having to fish out a little girl in Bintan CM pool. Lifeguard was there but it happens that she was looking elsewhere (there are two pools to watch). No thanks from the father who was playing with his other kid, saying that she was playing and she was okay. For God sake, I was watching that little girl being under the water for a couple of minutes reaching out for help before I pulled her out. Boo hoo!!

Hi,
Just back from Cherating (less than a day ago). I will be writing a very detailed report when the jet lag somewhat wears off. About the fence. I guarantee you, it is permanent. It is thick stainless steel that is bolted down. It is a potentially dangerous pool. The pool itself is dark blue, which makes it hard to see people underwater. Without the fence, there is about 30 meters length of drop off from the shallow end. You go from half meter of water to 1.75 meters in four steps.

As for climbing over the fence to get to the deep end. No one does that. You go to the deep end and walk down the steps or jump in. Guys, it's not that complicated.

Don't get me started on parental responsiblity. More than once, I have seen the lifeguards go in and stop a two year old from going down the steps to the deep end, while the child's mother was on a lounge chair reading a magazine. The worst story I heard was a mother who left her four year old and two year old at the pool to go to yoga class. A lifeguard just stopped the two year old before she was to go into the deep end. He asked where there parents were and the four year old didn't know, but said her mom went to some class. A lifeguard stayed with the kids until the mother came back (the kids were getting a little scared). When the mom came back she said she thought it was okay to go to yoga because she left the four year old to look after the two year old. Disgusting. Give me a break.

There are two more lifeguards when the mini-club is at the pool (they are mini-club GO's).

BTW, I never heard any GM complain about the fence while I was there.
