Hebrew daily “Yediot Ahronot” reports that Club Med has again postponed the opening of its Eilat branch, which will not operate this summer, for the third consecutive year. As a result, the reservations of hundreds of tourists, mostly from France, have been cancelled.
Club Med Eilat, owned by Ofer Brothers, was on the verge of closing down when Fattal Hotel Management signed an agreement with Club Med to manage the Eilat branch. The arrangement is the only one of its kind for Club Med. Under the new plan, Club Med Eilat will open in October, and the official inauguration will take place during Hannukah in December. Club Med's other branch in Israel, at Achziv, has also been closed for three years.
Club Med Eilat was originally scheduled to open in April 2004, after an estimated $6 million in renovations. The opening, postponed by construction delays until July, but has again been postponed. Renovation costs have since ballooned to $12 million
